A bust of a Greek idol has been found in England. He was the patron saint of wine and drunkenness

In Cockermouth, England, archaeologists have found a bust of Silenus. According to Greek mythology, he was a companion of Dionysus and was identified with wine, dancing and drunkenness.

Cockermouth is a small town that is located in the north of England. Most of the buildings date from the 18th and 19th centuries, although the town center still remembers medieval times. There is also a castle that was built by the Vikings, and it is to the Scandinavian warriors that the settlement owes most of its development.

However, 2,000 years ago the Romans also arrived here. They built a fort at Cockermouth to protect the river crossing on the main route for troops heading toward Hadrian’s Wall.

That’s why English archaeologists decided to excavate the site. During the latest research, the scientists were looking for traces of Roman presence in the area. Over the course of several months, the researchers managed to find the remains of a former Roman road, which was probably leveled toward the crossing of bridges over the Derwent River.
