A powerful volcano eruption in Iceland. Reykjanes Peninsula ablaze

An eruption has begun in Iceland. The sky has taken on a bloody red hue, and flames have engulfed a significant part of the Reykjanes Peninsula. Though the phenomenon looks spectacular in pictures, it can be lethally dangerous. That’s precisely why the residents of the town of Grindavik were evacuated.

The name of the Fagradalsfjall volcanic massif means “mountain in a beautiful valley” in Icelandic. After the latest eruption of the volcano situated on the Reykjanes Peninsula, we can indeed speak of true and mesmerizing beauty. In the pictures featuring the mountain, you can see a red, smoke-covered sky and long, burning tongues of lava. The setting is as fascinating as it is fatally perilous.

The eruption started on December 18th. It was long awaited by volcanologists who had warned in November that an eruption was imminent. The past few weeks had shown increased seismic activity in the massif. That’s precisely why a state of emergency was declared on the island.
