The Kabayan mummies, also known as fire mummies, are well-preserved human remains, with some dating back as far as 4000 years. They were discovered on the slopes of mountains in the Kabayan region, which is part of the Benguet province in the Philippines. While many of them have found their way into museums, some mummified bodies still remain in their natural environment.

Fire mummies of Kabayan

Some scientists believe that the “fire mummies” were created by the Ibaloi people between 1200 and 1500 AD. They were made in five cities in the Benguet province and hidden in caves. Other researchers argue that the mummification process may have begun as early as 2000 BC. To this day, the exact origin of the first mummy remains uncertain.
