Benjamin Franklin. The Founding Father of the United States and a Great Discoverer
Benjamin Franklin is one of the most important figures in the history of the United States. It is to him, among other things, that the country owes its independence. He is also a great inventor, credited with the invention of the lightning rod, as well as an entrepreneur, philosopher, and the man whose portrait can be found on the American hundred-dollar bill.
“Our new Constitution is now established and has an appearance that promises permanency. But in this world, nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes,” Benjamin Franklin wrote in a letter to his French friend Jean-Baptiste Le Roy. He penned these words on a piece of paper in 1789, shortly after the highest legal act came into effect.
Two years earlier, Franklin was one of the 39 signatories of the United States Constitution. At that time, he was 81 years old and very ill. However, he remained engaged in the politics of his country until the end and was committed to significant changes. He passed away from pleurisy in his home in Philadelphia on April 17, 1790.
