Led by dendroclimatologist Ulf Büntgen from the Swiss Federal Research Institute, the research established a direct connection between volcanic eruptions and the fall of the Eastern Roman Empire. In the 6th century, three volcanic eruptions occurred, causing a significant climate cooling period known as the Late Antique Little Ice Age. These eruptions took place in 536, 540, and 547 and had global consequences.

The Eruption Caused Climate Cooling.

Scientific studies revealed that volcanic dust caused climate cooling by limiting sunlight access to lower atmospheric layers. However, the climate was also influenced by decreased solar activity in the 7th century and the growth of polar ice caps. Together, these factors led to famine and mass migrations.

Dendrochronological research conducted by scientists showed that the period of abrupt climate cooling was felt both in Europe and Asia…
