Was the woman, whose mummified remains are in a museum in Munich, euthanized or sacrificed to the gods? Scientists are trying to solve the mystery of the death of an Inca woman who lived in the 16th century.

The mummy of the mysterious woman found its way into Bavarian collections in the early 20th century. As a result of the bombing of German cities during World War II, the mummy lost both legs below the knees. The remains were initially thought to have come from one of Europe’s prehistoric swamps.

A mysterious mummy from Munich?

Studies of stable isotopes of hydrogen and nitrogen carried out by German scientists from various scientific institutions in Munich, led by Stephanie Panzer, showed that the woman ate mainly sea food and corn, among other things. This type of diet is characteristic of the coastal inhabitants of Chile and Peru.

In addition, the woman’s hair was bound with a cloth made of fibers of hair from animals of the camel family, such as llama and alpaca.
