Dismembered human remains found in Mayan pyramid

The Maya left behind a rich heritage. However, we still don’t know everything about their daily life. One of the most fascinating aspects concerns the making of sacrifices.

The cities they built included stone palaces, temples and pyramids. Some of these impressive structures still survive today, attesting to the architectural genius of Mayan engineers.

After 900, this pre-Columbian civilization declined rapidly for unknown reasons. However, it is known, for example, that Mayan cities were highly toxic. The civilization also suffered from climate change, causing prolonged droughts. Subsequent archaeological discoveries prove that the Mayan legacy has still not been fully explored.

Macabre archaeological discovery in Mexico

Recently, archaeologists from the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) discovered dismembered human remains at a research site in the Mayan town of Moral Reforma.

The burial site was hidden beneath a temple-pyramid. The corpses belonging to more than a dozen young adult men were found in two groups corresponding to different periods. The younger ones were buried between 600 and 900 AD, while the older ones were buried between 300 BC and 250 AD.
