According to international law, establishing a state should not be complicated. On such a conviction, however, many daredevils have fallen.

“Maybe I should build my own world?” — wonders Giorgio Rosa, the main character of the film ”The Incredible Story of Rose Island”, which has recently been available on Netflix. A young Italian engineer is fed up with the restrictions arising from the law that is not very transparent to citizens and tries to get around the system by building his own state. Yes, building, because the private world he mentions is created at sea on a platform built from scratch. There is no question of separatist activity because the platform is in international waters. Its own constitution and flag are invented, passports are issued, and all who wish to do so are granted citizenship. Thus begins the struggle for international recognition. As is often the case with films, a story about such a peculiar social experiment would probably pass unnoticed, providing us with only momentary entertainment, were it not for the fact that it really happened. Giorgio Rosa is a real person, and the Island of Roses existed in the second half of the 1960s.
