The latest research has shown that earthworms are responsible for producing up to 140 million tons of grain. This means that if the entire population were a country, they would belong to the top ranks.

We are familiar with earthworms from gardens, fields, and meadows. They are most commonly seen after rain. And where do they come from? From the soil, of course, which is their natural habitat.

Furthermore, earthworms are one of the key factors in soil aeration and fertilization. They also help break down dead organic matter, releasing essential nutrients needed for plant growth.

Earthworms are a significant factor in global grain production

In the latest issue of the scientific journal “Nature Communications,” an article authored by researchers from Colorado State University was published. In it, scientists described the findings of their recent analyses. It turns out that earthworms enrich the soil much more than previously suspected. Steven J. Fonte’s team calculated that these creatures may be responsible for as much as 6.5% of global grain production (including wheat, rice, corn, and barley).

The authors analyzed maps of populations of different earthworm species, soil properties, and crop yields…
