End of an Era: Japan Mourns the Loss of Its Oldest Giant Panda

The oldest giant panda in Japan was 28 years old. She was loaned from China. She was supposed to return to her homeland in 2020, but the transportation was delayed due to successive complications. First due to the pandemic, and then due to health issues.

Although the giant panda is an unofficial symbol of China, these black-and-white bears can also be seen in Japan. There are only a few of them, and the oldest among them, Tan Tan, passed away on Monday, April 1, 2024. The cause of the senior panda’s death was heart disease related to old age.

The oldest giant panda in Japan lived to be 28 years old. In human years, that’s roughly equivalent to about a hundred springs.
