Poaching, habitat destruction, climate change — these are just some of the causes of species extinction. The International Union for Conservation of Nature publishes a list of organisms threatened with extinction. It was first published in 1963. Since then, nearly 60,000 species have been added to the list, of which as many as 20,000 are threatened with extinction. The main cause of extinction is human activity.

Extinct animal species: Przewalski’s horse

The species is considered extinct in the wild. The last wild horses were seen in Mongolia in 1969. Since 1990, there has been an attempt at reintroduction in areas of Mongolia, China, Kazakhstan and Ukraine.

Extinct animal species: Mustela nigripes / black-footed ferret

The black-footed ferret inhabited areas of North America. It had been considered an endangered species since 1965 and was listed as extinct in the wild since 1996. One of the reasons for the polecat’s tragic fate was the culling of prairie dogs that it hunted. In the case of this mammal, reintroduction has also been attempted. In 2006, Wyoming succeeded in restoring their population to 223 individuals in 2006.

An antelope perfectly adapted to life in harsh conditions. So what has made the species now extinct in the wild? Man. Hunters enjoyed hunting oryxes because of their long saber horns.
