Extraordinary Discovery in Spain: 24,000-Year-Old Cave Paintings Found
On the eastern coast of Spain, in the Cova Dones cave, archaeologists have unearthed a highly significant site of Paleolithic art. Over 100 cave paintings adorned the cave walls, with the oldest potentially dating back at least 24,000 years.
Spanish and British archaeologists have been conducting research on the cave paintings in Cova Dones, located in eastern Spain near Valencia, over the past few months. Although the cave is well-known to both researchers and tourists, scientists have only recently discovered one of the largest Paleolithic art sites in the region.
Unique Paintings in Eastern Spain
A group of scientists from the universities of Zaragoza and Alicante, as well as the Department of Archaeology at the University of Southampton, unveiled the cave’s secrets in June 2021. After two years of research and analysis, the authors reported their findings in the scientific journal “Antiquity.” Researchers emphasized that this site may be the most significant concentration of prehistoric art on the Iberian Peninsula.
