For decades, Egyptologists have debated the location of the legendary land of Punt, from where valuable products and animals such as frankincense trees, ebony, ivory, monkeys, hounds, and leopard skins were imported by ancient Egyptians.

For a long time, researchers lacked tools to definitively pinpoint the location of Punt. Advances in genetic research have now contributed to solving this mystery.

The Deity Enshrined in Baboons

Ancient Egyptians imported baboons into their country, which was associated with their religion. The god of wisdom, Thoth, was depicted, among other forms, as a baboon. However, these animals did not naturally inhabit Egypt, even in ancient times.

Therefore, Egyptians decided to import them from the depths of Africa, specifically from the land of Punt, according to historical records. Studies of baboon skeletons indicated that their dangerous canines were removed, as these were needed by the Egyptians to pay homage to the Egyptian god Thoth.
