Half human, half fish, that is, a Triton. Spectacular Discovery in the United Kingdom
Archaeologists in Kent, United Kingdom, made a spectacular discovery: a stone statue of a Roman sea god in the form of half human and half fish, sitting on a sea monster. This deity was Triton, and scientists unanimously agree that this find is unique.
The discovery took place during excavations within a Roman necropolis, located near the British A2 motorway. A residential development is being constructed in this area, and such large-scale construction projects often lead to interesting archaeological discoveries.
Triton in the Roman Necropolis
The stone statue depicting the god Triton was found within a structure resembling a Roman mausoleum, which served as both a tomb for a wealthy family and a place of worship for gods. It was situated in a water tank covered in clay. Archaeologists believe this was related to some ritual, as burn marks were found nearby. In close proximity, remnants of a probable base for another statue were discovered.
Each of the stone walls of the mausoleum was approximately 8 meters long. In the debris, a Roman coin from 320–330 AD was found, marking the likely period of the complex’s decline. The entire site was surrounded by a rectangular trench measuring 65 by 70 meters, which…
