Malta continues to surprise tourists with new attractions. This island nation in the Mediterranean Sea boasts a remarkable history that can be explored by visiting the capital city of Valletta or strolling its streets. This is made possible through a network of underground tunnels and crypts that were opened to the public in 2009. Their history dates back to the 17th century.
Since then, these underground spaces have been expanded and modified for various purposes, including defense, trade, and religious use. During World War II, it is estimated that Valletta’s underground shelters provided refuge for nearly 40,000 residents of the country.
