Italian region will subsidize tourists to come. Where’s the catch?

An Italian region has decided to “bribe” tourists to visit them more often. However, there is a condition that must be met in order to take advantage of this. Which one?

During the coronavirus pandemic, the tourism industry was hit hard by the lack of foreign tourists. Not surprisingly, therefore, when countries began to loosen restrictions, towns, villages and even entire regions held a “competition” to see who would offer more to visitors. A furore in 2021 was made in Italy, when the media circulated the news that another Italian town was offering houses for a symbolic 1 euro.

Hong Kong wants to give away half a million airline tickets for free

In contrast, in early October, Hong Kong authorities announced that they want to give away half a million airline tickets for free. Their total value is as much as more than $250 million. It’s a strategy to rebuild the country’s tourism industry, which still can’t recover from draconian restrictions.

Only 184,000 people flew into the country this year. Up to 56 million tourists visited Hong Kong in 2019. The price of free tickets in view of the losses suffered by this sector of the economy, the authorities probably also considered symbolic euros.
