Jelling is one of Denmark’s most interesting tourist attractions and at the same time — a place of special historical significance. The runestones that stand in front of the entrance to the Romanesque church, as well as other finds discovered in this small town, form a monument to the country’s history, commemorating Denmark’s baptism. What has been discovered in Jelling?

Jelling is a small town in central Jutland, located about 250 kilometers from Copenhagen. It is inhabited by just over 3,000 people. Seemingly, it does not stand out for anything special. Just an ordinary town, like many in the smallest of all the Nordic countries. However, it often turns out that appearances introduce the wrong suggestion, and so it is in this case. Where a small, neatly maintained church stands in Jelling today, the official history of Denmark began.

History of Jelling

The history of Jelling, like the official history of Denmark, begins in the 10th century, at a time when Vikings ruled those lands. Traces of the fearless warriors are present throughout Jutland and on many Danish islands, but it is the small town, located near Alboorg and Lindholm Høje, that deserves to be called the center of Danish statehood.
