Mysterious Village and Cemetery at the Bottom of a Lake in Turkey. Traces of an ancient tribe have been discovered there.
Underwater archaeologists have uncovered the ruins of a mysterious village and the remains of an ancient cemetery. The traces of the village were located at the bottom of Turkey’s largest lake.
Lake Van is the largest and deepest lake in Turkey. It is situated on the Armenian Highlands. It covers an area of 3,755 km², with a length of 120 km and a width of 80 km. Its maximum depth is nearly half a kilometer. Despite its large size, the lake is home to only two fish species: the endemic Chalcalburnus tarichi and Oxynoemacheilus ercisianus (discovered only in 2018!). Such low species diversity is mainly due to the challenging conditions of the water body. It is highly alkaline, with a pH of 9.8.

The latest research by underwater archaeologists has revealed new secrets from the depths of Lake Van. Divers reached an previously unexplored zone of the lakebed and found remains of an ancient town or village. Moreover, researchers also discovered traces of an old cemetery, likely belonging to the inhabitants of the settlement.
