Mystery in Venice: Venice’s Canal Water Takes a Surprising Green Hue
On Sunday morning, the residents of Venice were startled by the presence of an enigmatic green liquid observed in the Grand Canal near the renowned Rialto Bridge. Authorities are looking for those responsible for the incident, and activists are not admitting guilt. Is the substance dangerous to health?
Venice is one of Italy’s most touristic regions. The city, located in a lagoon on numerous marshy islands, attracts visitors with its unique atmosphere, magnificent architecture and infrastructure, as well as its famous carnival and film festival. It’s no wonder, then, that the area is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and visitors to sunny Italy want to see this magical place.
Venice’s contemporary problems
Although the Italian city on the water impresses with unforgettable views and tempts with gondola tours along narrow canals, the region is struggling with its own problems. First — Venice is sinking. Experts say that every year the water level rises by several millimeters. By the end of this century, it is estimated that the historic buildings will be submerged under water by up to half a meter. The authorities have decided that the city will set up a special system of sluices to control this situation.
