The sarcophagus of Pharaoh Ramesses II was identified after a re-examination of the decorated coffin found in 2009 in ancient Abydos in Upper Egypt. The discovery was made by archaeologists Ayman Damarani and Kevin Cahail. For years, it was unclear to whom this coffin belonged until a scientist from the University of Paris, Frédéric Payraudeau, undertook the research.
