Nature’s Skyward Wonder: Behold the Second Tallest Tree on Earth!
Scientists have discovered the largest tree that grows in Asia. The giant stands as the world’s second tallest. It was found in the world’s deepest canyon, located in China’s Tibet Autonomous Region.
The record-breaking tree encountered in Asia is 102 meters high. So it is taller than the Statue of Liberty (93 meters).
The tree is a giant cypress. It was found by researchers from China’s Peking University in Yarlung Cangpo Canyon in Tibet. It is not entirely certain what species it is specifically. Two possibilities are mentioned. The 100-meter record holder is either a Himalayan cypress (Cupressus torulosa) or a Tibetan cypress (Cupressus gigantea).
Scientists estimate that it is Asia’s tallest tree and the second tallest tree in the world. The Sequoia sempervirens, which grows in California, is considered the tallest. The tree — nicknamed Hyperion — was discovered in 2006. It is estimated to be between 600 and 800 years old.
