Pitcairn Island is located at the “end of the world.” It was settled by mutinous English sailors
The all-encompassing Pacific Ocean has many islands on it. Hawaii or Easter Island are widely known. In contrast, the tiny island of Pitcairn has an amazing history of people arriving there.
Pitcairn is Britain’s last “colony” in the Pacific. It is the smallest resident political community in the Pacific region. The island is steeped in legends, and its inhabitants have a rather unusual identity.
Where is Pitcairn Island located and what is on it?
The island is located closer to the eastern basin of the Pacific Sea. Its closest neighbors are in French Polynesia, less than 500 kilometers in a straight line. In 2018. Pitcairn was inhabited by only 50 people. Despite this, the island has an administration, a local press or a post office.
The island itself is of volcanic origin. It is the only inhabited island of the four that make up the British overseas territory. There are no rivers or lakes here. Drinking water is collected from rainwater in cisterns.
The island is actually popular because it is remote and so difficult to access. Attempts to build tourist infrastructure here always end in failure due to adverse weather conditions.
