The process of digestion is long and complicated. It involves many internal organs and the enzymes they produce.
Esophagus — the gateway to the stomach
Swallowed food goes through the esophagus to the stomach. This is made possible by muscles that contract to move the food mass in the right direction. Between the esophagus and the stomach is a gullet with a sphincter that “lets in” the food and prevents it from going back out. When the sphincter won’t open or is leaky, the mass backs up into the esophagus and reflux disease develops. Frequent irritation of the mucosa causes its inflammation and erosions of the esophagus.
