Scientists have analyzed the genomes of prehistoric hunter-gatherers who lived in Europe between 35,000 and 5,000 years ago. The researchers discovered how they managed to survive the last ice age.

The last period of glaciation on Earth ended about 21,000 years ago. At that time the climate of our planet was much colder than it is today. The ice sheet covered large areas of the Earth, and its presence had a very strong impact on the climate. During the Ice Age there were many extreme phenomena, such as increased volcanic activity, earthquakes and changes in sea levels. It was not an easy time for humans, as well as for animals and plants.

How did humans survive the last Ice Age period?

Researchers at the University of Tübingen have analyzed the genomes of 356 people who lived up to 35,000 years ago. Their remains came from 14 different countries in Europe and Central Asia. According to the study, the first representatives of Homo sapiens appeared in Eurasia about 47,000 years ago, but larger populations formed much later.
