Spooky fascinations — Vampires are among us…
The evolution of the vampire image has been going on for decades and invariably fascinates anthropologists. The path from creature to alluring aristocrat has even resulted in the creation of a separate subculture.
“The vampire is the next step in human evolution. If you are ready, the Temple is here to empower you. We believe that the value of the individual transcends the value of any group, tribe or nation. In everything we do, we believe in challenging anything that opposes individual freedom.”
With these words begins the statute of the Temple of the Vampire, an international organization that since 1989 has been associating people who consider themselves to be… vampires. The American institution is the largest of its kind in the world, although there are dozens of similar associations operating alongside it. Only in the United States the number of self-proclaimed vampires oscillates around 5 thousand. The peculiar community has one thing in common: fascination with legends about the children of the night and, in extreme cases, drinking human blood.
