The starry flag of the United States is one of those symbols that are known all over the world. However, not everyone knows that the white, five-pointed stars did not find their way onto the blue canton by accident, as did the red and white stripes. Each of them symbolizes one of the states, while the stripes, in turn, symbolize dependent territories. What distinguishes each state in the US and how many are there? You can find the answer below.

How were the states formed in the US? In the 18th century, settlers from Europe established 13 English colonies in North America: Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Virginia. The territories located in the central and eastern parts of the continent formed the foundations of the federal state, which today is the world’s greatest power, both economically and militarily.
