Stonehenge Theory as a Calendar Disproved by Scientists

The most famous megalithic structure guards its secrets well. Despite hundreds of years of research, it is still not known what it was used for. The latest theory — that Stonehenge was a large stone calendar — has just been debunked.

Megalithic structures are scattered all over the world. They are huge stone blocks stacked one next to the other. Often other stones are stacked flat on top of them. These structures can be elaborate and form tombs or temples. When they stand in a circle, they are called cromlechs. This is one example of prehistoric art.

The most famous cromlech is Stonehenge. It is located about 13 km from the town of Salisbury in Wiltshire, southern England. This huge structure was built gradually. It began to be erected about 3,000 years ago, and was completed around 1600 BC. The structure is huge, and who erected it and exactly how it was built is still a mystery today.

Another mystery that scientists are breaking their heads over is what was Stonehenge actually meant for? Indications have been made that it may have been a temple, a place to perform rituals, an astronomical observatory or even a kind of calendar.
