In 2022, a magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck the western coast of Mexico. While the catastrophe caused damage to buildings, it allowed scientists to make an extraordinary discovery. Under the foundations of one of the buildings, a large serpent head was found.

Archaeological discoveries can be categorized into two types. Some are the result of long-term excavations, while others are the product of chance. Moreover, they don’t always have to be the work of professional archaeologists. Just recall the story of an eight-year-old who found a silver Roman coin; this artifact was discovered in a sandbox.

Sometimes, extreme natural phenomena can also assist archaeology, as was the case in Italy, Spain, or Iraq last year. Droughts revealed ancient relics, including an ancient bridge and even a city from a lost empire.
