The largest stadiums in the world, despite appearances, are not located in Europe. Moreover, most of them are not designed for soccer matches. Some impress with their size and others with their technological solutions, but they have one thing in common — today they are extraordinary temples of both sports and pop culture.

Stadiums, where various sports were played, were built as far back as antiquity. In Greece, athletic competitions were held in stadiums, and the Olmecs played ullamaliztli on similar facilities. The Roman equivalent of stadiums were amphitheaters. The famous Colosseum, which was built in 70–80 AD, was one of the largest sports venues of the time. The auditorium could hold up to 50,000 spectators. Fans sat in the stands to watch gladiator fights, games and even executions.

Since then, stadiums have invariably served the same function. They were meant to provide spectators with entertainment — both sports and cultural. For over the past few decades, stadiums have become a temple not only for soccer, but also for music.
