The Rosetta Stone’s Repatriation: 200,000 Strong Demand its Return to Egypt
The Rosetta Stone is set to return to Egypt, demanded by the renowned Egyptologist Dr. Zahi Hawass from the British Museum in London. It was thanks to this artifact that Jean-François Champollion deciphered Egyptian hieroglyphs. Over 200,000 people have already signed the petition. This is not the only artifact that Egyptians want to reclaim.
“Thank you for 1 million likes on Facebook. Do you think we can gather as many signatures for my petition to return our artifacts to Egypt?” wrote the well-known Egyptian archaeologist and former head of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, Dr. Zahi Hawass, on social media.
Since 2002, the scientist has been working towards the repatriation of artifacts stolen from Egypt. In the petition, he emphasized that “his intention was never to return legally acquired Egyptian objects currently held in museums around the world, but only those that were stolen”.
He also appealed to museums to stop the unethical practice of purchasing stolen items. The petition was created in anticipation of the upcoming opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum, an event planned for the coming months.
