Notre Dame Cathedral is currently being rebuilt after a fire. What will be restored and what will change? The award-winning architect showed off his design.
Notre Dame Cathedral caught fire on April 15, 2019, after 6 p.m. Despite activating the fire alarm, firefighters were not called to the scene as soon as smoke was detected. As a result, the 13th-century building lost sections of its roof and walls, and with them its acoustics. Specialists are working to restore it to its original splendor according to a design that includes a 96-meter-tall spire. The cathedral’s characteristic reverberation is also to be restored.
The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Paris prosecutor’s office. The unofficial cause of the fire was said to be an oversight during ongoing renovation work. Investigators rule out intentional arson or a terrorist act. Nearly 400 firefighters participated in the extinguishing of Notre Dame Cathedral. One of them was slightly injured.
